The Most Delicious & Buttery Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

A CORE MEMORY HAS BEEN UNLOCKED…keep reading.

I went to Great Neck South High School and the cafeteria chocolate chip cookies were the BEST! They used to sell 3 buttery warm cookies for just one dollar!

I wonder how much they go for today! If you know, or are a current HS student in Great Neck, or elsewhere, please leave a comment and tell me if you have these buttery soft cookies in your cafeteria and what the price is today!

For $1 back in 1996-1999 got you the most delicious, buttery (to the point that your fingers and palms also got all buttery), perfectly raw yet perfectly cooked to perfection, and melt in your mouth thin warm chocolate chip cookies.
I dream of them. Last week I accidentally recreated them and my core memory was unlocked!

Below is the exact method I used to recreate the most delicious and perfectly cooked gluten-free and dairy-free chocolate chip cookies. I used the Trader Joe’s refrigerated cookie dough, usually found near the dairy and eggs.

I’m calling this the 5:5:2 cookie method.

I bet this method could work with any break and bake cookie dough, if you try it let me know how they come out in the comments!

  1. Lay your cookie dough balls on a parchment-lined sheet tray about 2 inches apart.

  2. Preheat your oven to 350°.

  3. Once the oven is preheated, using a fork and the pressure of your hand smoosh each cookie dough ball down in both directions, like you would a peanut butter cookie.

  4. Bake the cookies for 5 minutes, set a timer.

  5. Take the tray out and bang the tray on the countertop to flatten the cookies.

  6. Bake for another 5 minutes, set a timer.

  7. Take the tray out and bang the tray on the countertop again to flatten the cookies even more.

  8. Turn off the oven.

  9. Place the sheet tray back in the warm oven and let the cookies sit in there for 2 more minutes. Set a timer!

  10. Take them out of the oven and bang the train for the last time. Let them cool on the sheet tray.

  11. Enjoy warm or at room temperature with your favorite glass of milk!
