Snunch & Sninner

Ever heard of a "snunch" (snack lunch) or a "sninner" (snack dinner)? Sari Imberman @_funwithfood introduced me to these terms that describe the wonderful world of snack plates!

By simply changing how you think about meal time, you can craft a satisfying plate that's great for munching on the go, as well as a versatile choice for both kids and adults.

What to include in your snack plate

Cheeses: Cheese adds depth and richness to your snack plate. Cheddar, mozzarella, and swiss cheese are great options, or you could try string cheese for the kiddos!

Fresh Veggies: This is a great way to use up leftover produce from your meal prep - peppers, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, etc. Add a favorite spread like hummus or my edamame cilantro dip!

Salty Snacks: Consider including salty delights like olives, pickles, or roasted nuts. These items provide the much-needed salty kick that complements the other elements on your plate.

Crackers: The perfect vehicle for cheese, cured meats, and spreads. Choose a selection of crackers with different grains and shapes for variety.

Cured Meats: Add some cured meats like prosciutto, salami, or chorizo for a savory touch and some protein!

Something Sweet: Don't forget a touch of sweetness! Fruit like grapes or figs, chocolate chips, or a drizzle of honey can balance the saltiness on your plate.

Benefits of Snack Plates

No cooking required: One of my favorite things about snack plates is that they require zero cooking. You can whip up a fantastic meal in a matter of minutes, saving you precious time and effort.

Minimize food waste: Are you guilty of having a few odds and ends lingering in your fridge at the end of the week? Turn this situation into a culinary opportunity. Create a designated shelf or area in your fridge for items that need to be eaten soon. Place a note that reads "EAT ME" or "EAT FIRST" to encourage your family to help clear the fridge with their own snack plates!

Like a lunchable, but better: Snack plates aren't just for dinner; they can also make a yummy and nutritious lunch. Think of them as a more sophisticated version of a lunchable. Kids love these meals, making them an ideal option for school lunches too. By assembling a colorful and flavorful snack plate, you can ensure a balanced and exciting midday meal.

The next time you’re staring at your fridge and feeling like you’d rather do anything than turn on the stove to cook - remember snack plates!

They're not only a feast for your taste buds but a creative way to use up leftovers and make your mealtimes exciting.
