Easy Ways to Make Your Kitchen More Functional

Are you looking for ways to make your kitchen a more functional and enjoyable place to be? It can sometimes feel overwhelming trying to figure out how to best make use of the space.  But don’t worry – sprucing up your kitchen doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive!

Today I’m sharing some simple tips that will help you optimize your time in the kitchen while also ensuring it looks its best. From clever storage solutions to functional tips and tricks, these easy hacks are sure to save you time, money, and hassle so you can enjoy cooking in a beautiful and efficient space. After all, the kitchen is the heart of the home and we want it to feel loved too!

Here are a few common problems most people face when it comes to having a functional kitchen as well as some simple solutions.

Ingredients are Spread All Over the Kitchen

Having easy access to your ingredients in the kitchen can make the cooking process run much smoother. However, when everything is spread out, it can lead to chaos and confusion. So, how do you make your kitchen more functional?

One solution is to organize your space and your food. Consider investing in kitchen organizers like drawer dividers, spice racks, and storage baskets.

Make sure you are properly storing your food in the most convenient spots. Keep frequently used ingredients at eye level for easy grabbing and less-used items higher up or in the back. A couple of examples: All your pantry items should be together, not spaced out into 3-4 different areas of the kitchen. Coffee/Tea stuff should be near your mugs and coffee machines.

When it comes to kid's food there are a few simple solutions. First, keep baskets on low shelves in the pantry filled with their favorite snacks so they can easily access them. Store unopened items out of reach so they are forced to finish one item first. This helps to prevent multiple bags from being opened at a time and keeps food from going bad. I like to call that the “eat me first” bin (which I also suggest for the fridge).

Lastly, regularly declutter your kitchen and get rid of anything that is taking up unnecessary space or ingredients that have gone bad. Keeping your ingredients organized and in specific and useful spots will help make your kitchen more functional.

Kitchen Counters are Cluttered

A cluttered kitchen counter can make it difficult to find what you need during meal prep or cooking, creating unnecessary stress and frustration. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to organize and declutter your counters to make your kitchen more functional.

One approach is to invest in storage containers, such as jars or bins, to keep loose items like utensils, spices, or snacks organized and easily accessible.

Another strategy is to limit the number of appliances or decorative items on the counter, opting for shelves or cabinets for storage instead.

Have a separate area in your home to keep mail, kid’s papers, and important forms. The kitchen is usually the dumping ground for all these things, so create a new system.

By taking a few simple steps, you can transform your cluttered kitchen counter into a well-organized, functional space that makes mealtime a breeze.

Everyday Items are Scattered and Unorganized

Do you ever find yourself rummaging through drawers looking for certain items? Do your cabinets looks unorganized and cluttered? This can make your kitchen feel unfunctional and chaotic, but there are a few simple solutions.

Start by grouping like items together in a specific way. Don’t just put all of the cups in the same cabinet. Take it a step further. Group all your drinking glasses on one shelf, your coffee mugs on another, and your wine glasses on a third. This will save time when locating items and putting them away.

Consider labeling shelves and drawers, so everything has a designated place. This way it doesn’t matter who is putting the dishes away. Things will always end up in the correct spot.

Adding simple organization systems like drawer dividers, lazy susans, and shelf racks can help to make your most used items even more organized.

Kitchen Revival

Part of my Kitchen Revival service is to assess where things should be compared to where they are currently. We want tools and appliances to be accessible, but not on the counter. We want clean spaces - clutter-free counters with things you need only one smooth move away.

Here’s an example of the pantry before and after a recent Kitchen Revival I did. We moved all the food and pantry items to the right side so the left side could house her main appliances (Vitamix blender and Instant Pot next to it.) We also created easy access to Tupperware containers each with their matching lids for easy finding.
